Adriano Schmid (Discovery): “There Are Great Talents for Latin American Production”

Adriano Schmid’s job is to supervise the original productions of the different channels Discovery Networks has in the region. They work with production companies from Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Peru trying to meet the signals’ main objective: to encourage and satisfy curiosity about the real world, including the sciences, natural history, extreme situations and natural disasters.

“We have found excellent talents in those countries,” commented Schmid, adding that in 2010 highly successful productions were made, such as those related to the Mexican Bicentennial and the documentary on the Chilean miners rescue, for which they got free access to places unavailable to other media .

But the big Discovery hit in 2010 was The Amazing Race second season, which was broadcast on Discovery Channel in the second half of the year.

“It was a great production work requiring great logistics, the involvement of 12 countries and a huge production team. Preproduction took many months; production took more than two months and postproduction demanded a lot of work. We are very pleased with the results in terms of audience,” explained Schmid, adding that they are considering doing a third season in 2011 and working simultaneously on several projects.
