Discovery Leads Factual Spaces for Its Ninth Year

Discovery took on leadership with its original productions in markets such as Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia, being one of the three most viewed signals in the region in 2010.

Discovery Networks Latin America/US Hispanic (DLA/USH) has disclosed audience figures for 2010, which place Discovery Channel as leader in the documentary genre for nine consecutive years, and as one of the three most viewed signals on Latin American pay television.

The original production strategy promoted by the company with productions such as Instinto Asesino and Las verdaderas Mujeres asesinas, and the Pareja Salvaje, A Prueba de Todo y Cómo Funciona el Universo series account for the high ratings in markets like Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Colombia. Likewise, special programs with a huge local relevance as Chile 8.8 and Rescate Imposible: 70 días Bajo Tierra contributed to cement the channel’s leadership in the Chilean market.

“The results obtained by Discovery Channel in 2010, and throughout the last few years, show that Latin American audiences value the varied, innovative and quality programming we keep offering,” assured Ángela Recio Sondón, vice president of Discovery Channel Latin America.

According to Ibope figures, in 2010 Discovery Channel had a 12% audience growth in Mexico compared to the previous year, ranking as the most viewed channel in the documentary category. The release of Pareja Salvaje was the most tuned Discovery Channel program in that country in 2010, followed by the release of Vida, Las Verdaderas Mujeres Asesinas e Instinto Asesino. El Grito que Sacudió a México stood out as the most viewed original production in that market.

Finally, in Colombia, the channel reached its highest level of audience with Vida, followed by The Amazing Race’s second season, Instinto Asesino and the releases of Cómo Funciona el Universo y Las Verdaderas Mujeres Asesinas. Likewise, Discovery Channel succeeded in attracting huge audiences with its original productions of Pecados de mi Padre, Paramilitares and the documentary Ingrid Betancourt: Seis Años en la Jungla, the channel’s most viewed program in that market in 2010. All of the above allowed Discovery Channel to rule throughout 2010 on the factual segment and continue to be one of the most important pay TV signals nationwide.
