Nielsen: Internet TV Viewers Prefer Pay Television
A new report from Nielsen and CTAM indicates that the proliferation of online TV content is complementing rather than undermining traditional media consumption, with only 3% of users that consume Internet contents reporting that they will cancel their pay TV subscriptions.

This new study establishes that 84% of people who tune in to shows or movies on the Internet on their TV sets are viewing the same or more amounts of programmed TV regularly since they began consuming and downloading programs. In addition, 92% of them are subscribed to a pay television service. These results contradict recent research which indicated that 11% of online-content consumers were canceling their pay television subscriptions.
“Having a very good understanding of these evolutionary behaviors is critical to our business,” said Char Beales, CEO and president of CTAM. “We have learned that the new technologies are offering additional opportunities for viewers to get access to movies and TV shows at their own convenience. But this is complementing traditional television, and not replacing it.”
“These consumers are satisfying their desire for entertainment by consuming more Internet content on their TV sets and also watching shows that would probably be lost,” added Todd Cunningham, MTV Networks’ senior vice president for strategic concepts and research, and also one of the volunteers who supervised this report. “So, we are highly interested in learning more about this percentage of polled individuals who discovered shows first through the Internet and then looked for them through traditional television,” he said.
